Early in March 2011, Antalis South Africa, in conjunction with Arjowiggins, nationally launched the new Arjowiggins piece aptly named ‘The Power of Five5’; designed byPaul Hinch of Grid Worldwide Branding and Design and printed by Hansa Print Cape Town. Each brochure made use of one of the five papers being showcased namely: Skin Curious Collection, Rives Dot and Tradition, Conqueror Bamboo, and Curious Translucents.
Annette Clayton, Account Manager for ArjoWiggins from the UK, kicked off the function by detailing the uniqueness of each of the five papers.
Conqueror Bamboo; bamboo is well known as one of the most sustainable natural alternative materials as well as for its quality and sheer good looks. By crossing innovation with a completely new material; fast growing, renewable bamboo creates a range of luxurious papers and boards, which print beautifully, naturally. The five warm, rustic earthy shades in the range reflect this nature-conscious attitude. There are no OBAs (optical brightening agents) in the Natural White and the colours are created using only natural (ochre) pigments mined from the South of France, all this for the prestigious face of greener communications. Conqueror Bamboo is a stunning new environmentally friendly range.
Skin Curious Collection is an amazingly even matt paper that is silky smooth to the touch. Skin was developed by Arjowiggins cutting–edge technology to give outstanding results in four-colour printing combined with extremely short drying times. The range has vibrant, contemporary colours that set off any design; Perfected by the Groups’ Technology and Innovation engineers, Skin offers an un-paralleled resistance to abrasion and fingerprints. Skin is a sensual material, invitingly soft to look at and touch, forms part of the Curious Collection from Arjowiggins Creative Papers.
Rives Dot is a contemporary, modern texture inspired by the automobile and creative sportswear industry with a geometric design created to meet many print requirements. The range is FSC certified and made at Rives Mill near Lyon, France, the home of the Rives Range.
All Arjowiggins mills work constantly to reduce the environmental impact of paper manufacturing. All products in the Arjowiggins range are FSC™ certified mixed source. These products use only elemental chlorine free (ECF) pulp from trees grown in sustainable forests.
Caroline Coughlan, Marketing Manager for Antalis South Africa, discussed the creative thought process behind The Power of Five5. The enclosed 5 booklets have a specific focus on educating designers on the importance of considering their paper selection right from the inception of the creative process - the reference to the five stages of grief was used throughout the series reflecting the bitter disappointment if paper selection isn’t privy to the process from the start!
The Arjowiggins piece is about the Collective Power of Five. Five books are cased in a beautifully crafted box made from Skin Curious Collection Black 380g/m². Each book showcases various papers including the new Curious Translucent Colours as the inner cover stock. The stunning Opale range, used in book one, demonstrates the effects of fluorescents inks and gloss UV Varnish on uncoated paper. Paul manages to match the various papers in each book to add dimension to the senses. As a whole this series explores 5 stories - the 5 senses, 5 elements, 5 tetrominoes, 5 stages of grief and 5 platonic solids. But individually they explore only one side of each of the stories. It is only when they are viewed together that you get the full, holistic picture.
